Foolish Girl
Popular "Underground" comix
by Vesna
comes alive on TV February 9 through 13, 2004
on CBC's ZeD
New animated children's series to be showcased at MIP-TV 2004
An underground comic character on national television? What'll they think of
next? The network is CBC. And the all-Canadian comic strip with its finger on
the pulse of turn-of-the-millennium relationships, neuroses and angst, is Foolish
Girl. Act 1 of Foolish Girl premieres on the February 9 episode of ZeD, with
acts 2, 3 and 4 following February 10-12. Capping the week, the hilariously drawn
and written program will be featured in its 30 minute entirety on Friday the
13th's edition of ZeD.
The comix - by the artist-known-as-Vesna - has been speaking to foolish girls
everywhere for several years in publications like NOW, Exclaim, Chart, Don't
Touch me, and the Globe & Mail. Now fans and newbies alike will see Foolish
Girl in all her foolishness when it premieres in animated form in February on
CBC's alternative pop-culture program ZeD.
CCI Entertainment (Cambium Catalyst International) is producing and interest
is running high on this show, such that talks have already begun on a potential
series.
Creater Vesna Mostovac, a.k.a. Foolish Girl, began drawing comix in 1995 after
the end of an 11-year relationship. "I went boy crazy and started drawing
and writing Foolish Girl in order to contain my foolish behavior on paper," says
Vesna.
In 1998, CCI Entertainment approached Vesna with the idea of making Foolish
Girl into a television series. The partners have worked slowly and deliberately,
translating its spirit of urban, foible-ridden comedy to the wider form. "I
have learned a lot about the process it takes to make something small and independent
reach a wider audience and am forever grateful to the people at CCI," Vesna
says.
Vesna, attended Concordia film school, the Ottawa School of Art and the Ontario
College of Art (majoring in animation and film at the latter). In 1988 she was
employed by the Animation House and has been working in animation ever since.
She has painted backgrounds for Prozzak music videos, colourstyled images on
John Callaghan's Quads, and created special effects for such TV series as Stickin'
Around, Design on Peep and the Big Wide World, as well as for ad clients such
as Kraft and Hostess.
Born in Terrace Bay, Ontario, Vesna moved to Toronto with her family at the
age of 3. Her father, a painter, was her earliest influence. Other influences
include Dr.Seuss, Gary Panter and numerous local artists, including Bob Fortier,
Fiona Smyth and Chris Hutsul.
A Toronto resident, Vesna's future plans include traveling, creating another
comic book and painting.
"I wish to be part of a 'Heritage moment' just like the creator of Superman," she
says jokingly.
Cambium Entertainment was formed in 1982 and has executive produced hundreds
of hours of award winning programs worldwide. In 2002, Cambium merged with Catalyst

entities to form Cambium Catalyst International Entertainment (CCI). CCI creates
